Hello and welcome to another Side-Quest episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone! It’s Madelyn’s turn to pick again, and she’s got a good one. A fun one, you might say. Whatever that means.
As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere you want. Check it out on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!
What makes a game fun? Does it vary based on the game? Outside our personal opinion, is there a general consensus on what makes a game fun? How important is fun when it comes to assessing the success of a game? Is there a better word for “fun” to use here? How do you reconcile the strong negative emotions that games can make you feel (guilt, sadness, anger) with whether it’s fun or not?
In the words of Madelyn herself: “Gamers just wanna have fun…or do they?”
M: And the major one of those, of course, is Kojima’s…now instant classic (just kidding, we decided there were no instant classics), instant masterpiece of…urination?
M: No doubt it is the best game that asks you to manage your character’s urine.
M: I feel like that is an uncontroversial take.
E: The best thing about it is it’s not like he has levels of needing to go to the bathroom-
E: -it’s just to like…craft supplies. It’s not survival mechanics, it’s resource management.
M: Oh no.
