The Topic

What do we even mean when we say “choice based game?” What are some genres that generally don’t get considered when thinking about that umbrella? How do different design philosophies affect the choices’ presentation and impact? Why do choices need to matter? How many games are secretly just dating sims?

The Actual Discussion

We talk about the various genres of choice-based games from text adventures to dating sims to, yes, Telltale Games. The past game developers really had a keener sense for names. We definitely marvel at how much every game is secretly a dating simulator. It’s true, it’s all of them. We talk about what makes a choice matter, and how that answer might be different based on your definition of “matter.”
