Side-Quest 212. Growing Up to RPG Mentor Age

Hello, and welcome to another episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone. This week, we’re talking about characters aging in video games. We didn’t even talk about Clair Obscur, but the gommage looms before us!

As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere. Check it out on Apple PodcastsYouTubeSpotify, or Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!

The Topic

Nomura art of Sora's design from each of the four numbered Kingdom Hearts games

What games allow their characters to age and/or have the opportunity to let their characters age? Which games offer mechanical effects to age, and which are mostly a storytelling device? What’s the difference in feeling between steady aging versus a time skip in a video game? What feelings come with watching characters age over time?

The Actual Discussion

Haruka in Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth as a young woman

We talk about two major series where characters age from game to game: Kingdom Hearts and Like A Dragon. However, we also talk about the different approaches these games have to age, and the way it relates to our reactions. We also talk about various games that include time skips within a single game, showing characters at two particular times in their lives. And, of course, we talk about sim games where aging is more of a mechanic.
