Hello and welcome to another Side-Quest episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone! It’s Madelyn’s choice of topic this week, and she’s picked DLC! We talk about the history, old and new controversies, and more. Are we downloadable content? Technically!
As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere you want. Check it out on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!
The Topic
What is DLC? What did it originate from? What different forms does it take today? How do players respond to DLC announcements? Does the existence of DLC mean that the original game was “unfinished”? What does it even mean for a game to be released unfinished? What DLC is considered controversial, and what DLC is universally acclaimed?
The Actual Discussion
Damn, though, that is some mighty fine horse armor. We talk about price points in the game industry and what games actually cost nowadays, and how that might factor into DLC. We also compare DLC to the old strategy of simply re-releasing a game with new content and how much we generally prefer the new method. We talk a little bit about how cosmetic DLC can be both fun and exploitative in different scenarios. We do not talk about ReMind as much as you’d expect.
