Hello and welcome to another Side-Quest episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone! This week, we talk about video game marketing. Hey. Stop putting in that order for custom brass knuckles. Just think this through for a second. Wait! I said wait!
As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere you want. Check it out on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!
The Topic
What makes good or bad marketing for video games? What are current popular strategies for marketing a game? Why do game companies make their announcements so early these days? Could a consumer ever win a lawsuit about false advertising in games? Who doesn’t love Butterfingers?
The Actual Discussion
We go through some of the most egregious examples of poorly-thought-out marketing stunts over the years and give some descriptions of truly horrifying ads. We talk about how social media has changed the ways that games companies relate to us, and we mention how much we hate that everybody refers to customers as “gamers” now. Also, we try to identify what makes good marketing, which mostly comes down to avoiding bad marketing as much as possible.
