Hello and welcome to another Side-Quest episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone! This week, we’re talking about side-quests! No, not these side-quests, real video game side-quests.
As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere you want. Check it out on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!
The Topic
What defines a side-quest? How is it different from a main quest or side activities that aren’t quests? What are some of our favorite side-quests? How about games that are entirely made up of side-quests like Breath of the Wild? Should those be called side-quests anymore, or should they be called something else?
The Actual Discussion
We talk about guidelines for side-quests and the places we think those guidelines can be bent or ignored depending on the game or the quest. Madelyn manages not to make the whole episode into a deep-dive on Yakuza substories. We also talk about how games encourage or don’t encourage players to check out side-quests, and what effect that has on the play experience. Also: Cup Noodles.
