What are some of the mechanical, visual, and other considerations that must be made to make a monster function and seem convincing? Does this differ across different monster types? How do you make a monster scary in a game, or how do you make it cute?

We talk about lots of different monsters and creatures across different genres of game, and we also reminisce on monsters that we’ve found scary in games before. We realize there are a lot of mechanical and design considerations and limitations that go into a monster before the visual element event goes anywhere sometimes. Also, we muse on how many monsters are just scary sexy women for some reason. Wonder what that says about us gamers.
