Hello, and welcome to another episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone. This week, we’re talking phones in games. Today I learned that not all 555 numbers are fake. Good to know!

The Topic

How do phones get used in games? How has technology evolved with the times in terms of how it’s integrated? What do games get wrong about how real people use phones? Where are areas of innovation that could still be explored?

The Actual Conversation

We talk about phone-based UI aesthetics and selfie cams – the two biggest phone-based innovations in games right now. We also go over changes in phones, such as the update from pay phones to cell phones in Yakuza. However, there is also some debate about how texting and calling actually work in games, versus how people actually text and call each other. Also, we introduce the concept of the switchboard and the landline to our younger listeners.
