The Topic

Key Art from poker in Red Dead Redemption featuring a stylized drawing of cowboys playing cards

What are some of the more notable card minigames in video games? What makes a good card minigame versus a bad one? Can a video game-based card game be easily transferred to a real card game, and vice versa? Who designs these card minigames, and what goes into their development?

The Actual Discussion

The final match of Queen's Blood tournament on the boat in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth featuring a cheering crowd and a waiting opponent

We talk about some of the more notable and well-loved video game card games, as well as a few lesser-known ones from our experiences. We discuss what goes into a successful card game, from a good OST, to a good time-per-round, to the right balance of simplicity and depth. Some time also goes into talking about card game design in general, and whether the kids these days are playing as much cards as we did in those days.
