Side-Quest 135. Nice Weather We’re Having

Hello and welcome to another Side-Quest episode of Talk This! It’s Dangerous to Podcast Alone! This week, we’re talking about weather in video games. I would like weather to stop happening outside. I would like there to be no weather for a bit.

As always, you can listen to our podcast basically anywhere you want. Check it out on Apple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsSpotify, and Pandora (or head over to our episodes page for even more options). Or just listen below!

The Topic

What purposes does weather serve in video games? How is it used mechanically? Narratively? How have weather systems and effects changed over the year. What even is a “dynamic weather system” and how has that become an expected feature in 3D cinematic games?

The Actual Discussion

We talk about how different games have integrated weather into its gameplay systems from Breath of the Wild to Days Gone to Ghost of Tsushima. There are a bunch of games we’d like to have weather, and a bunch of games we don’t really care. We talk about different ways games use weather, and the impact of different kinds of weather on narrative beats.
